First half auto sales solid
WARREN — Automobile sales in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties through June continue their surge, eclipsing sales for the first half of 2018.
There were 48,751 new and used vehicles sold across Ohio by dealerships in the Mahoning Valley, up 7.4 percent from the 45,388 vehicles sold during the same six-month period last year, according to a report from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association.
Dealers in June sold 8,214 new and used vehicles, up 6.8 percent for the month from 7,688 in June 2018.
Separate reports from the dealers’ association for sales to only residents for the six months in the three-county region show a 3.2 percent increase for new and used vehicles, a 2.5 percent increase for new vehicles and a 4.3 percent increase for used vehicles.
There were 28,871 vehicles sold through June, up from 27,958 for the same time in 2018. There were 16,079 new vehicles sold, up from 15,680, and 12,304 used vehicles sold, up from 11,787, the report shows.
Year-over-year in June, there was a 5.4 percent increase in overall sales to buyers in the region, from 4,630 to 4,881 last month.
Dealerships in Trumbull County with the most sales across Ohio in June were Toyota Volvo of Warren and Sims Buick GMC Truck, tie at 126; Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren, 107; Greenwood Hubbard Chevrolet, 98; Diane Sauer Chevrolet, 94; and Apostolakis Honda, 66.
Dealerships in the county with the most sales in the region were Toyota Volvo of Warren, 118; Sims Buick GMC Truck, 116; Diane Sauer Chevrolet and Greenwood Hubbard Chevrolet, tie at 92; and Wollam Chevrolet, 64.

The top used vehicle sellers in the county last month were Sims Buick GMC Truck, 51; Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren, 50; Toyota Volvo of Warren, 47; Diane Sauer Chevrolet, 40; and Greenwood Hubbard Chevrolet, 39.
Tops in the Mahoning Valley for sales across Ohio in June was Greenwood Chevrolet, 312, and tops in the area for regional sales was also Greenwood with 302.
Across northern Ohio, new vehicle sales continued to be soft with a 2.8 percent drop in June from June 2018. Numbers from the dealers’ association show dealers sold 21,218 new vehicles last month compared to 21,829 in June 2018.
Total new vehicle sales are off 3 percent so far this year, but used vehicles are up 3.4 percent.
“Moving forward, we expect new vehicle sales to remain steady, but slightly off from last year’s strong totals. When you add new vehicle sales and used vehicle sales, the market is virtually flat with last year,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, dealers’ association president.
