GROUP RECOGNIZED: The Western Reserve Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management was recently awarded the society’s prestigious EXCEL Gold Award for accomplishments in 2018.

The EXCEL award aligns individual chapters’ and state councils’ activities with SHRM’s aspirations for the human resources profession. The award recognizes major accomplishments, strategic activities and tactical initiatives that elevate the profession of human resources.

The EXCEL Award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that must be met.

RIBBON CUTTING: A ribbon cutting was scheduled Friday at Valor Recovery Center, 45-47 N. Canfield Niles Road, to celebrate the company’s certification by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and receipt of the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission.

Valor Recovery Center is now able to provide a full continuum of services from its 33-bed Austintown facility. Services include residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpatient, medication-assisted treatment, ambulatory withdrawal management, case management, individual counseling, group counseling, family programming, holistic wellness, and fitness and recovery.

FOOT CARE PROVIDED: NOMS Ankle & Foot Care Centers will provide routine foot care at Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice Senior Center in Youngstown on the last Friday of every month.

Dr. Jennifer Flo will be the lead podiatric physician on staff.

Routine foot care includes a foot exam, nail and callus care, which is covered by Medicare and Medicaid every 61 days. Podiatric physicians can also help with foot pain and some flexibility and mobility problems. They can also prescribe treatments such as diabetic shoes, physical therapy and wound care.

The Ohio Living Senior Center is located at 1110 Fifth Ave. Attendees must provide picture identification and insurance information. Call 330-744-5071 with questions.

HEALTH OFFICIALS PRESENT AT CONFERENCE: Meridian HealthCare President and CEO Larry Moliterno and Director of Criminal Justice, Alki Santamas, recently presented at the 2019 National TASC (Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities) Conference in Cleveland.

The conference brings individuals from around the country together to explore the latest advancements and issues in the treatment and recovery of justice-involved individuals with behavioral health needs.

Moliterno and Santamas presented on “Building Leaders from Within” and discussed how the integration of criminal justice and behavioral health care has an impact on the organization’s ability to identify and prepare future leaders.

STEEL PRESENTATION: Thomas Leary, professor in the history department at Youngstown State University, recently spoke to the Torch Club of Youngstown on preserving the history of steelmaking. In the talk, at YSU’s Kilcawley Center, Leary described ways in which deindustrialized communities remember their industrial past.

People on the Move

WESTMINSTER PROF. WINS AWARD: Dr. Peter Smith, professor of chemistry and chair of the chemistry and biochemistry department at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., was recently presented with the Louis J. Sacco Award for distinguished service to the American Chemical Society Division of Professional Relations.

The award recognizes those who have served the group in an exemplary manner over a significant period of time. Smith served in the leadership of the division from 2008-18, first as treasurer and then in the chair succession.

It was presented to Smith April 2 at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Orlando, Fla.

HOSPITAL ADDS PHYSICIAN: Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Warren, part of Steward Health Care, has added Dr. Jacob A. Bair, a board-certified physician in family medicine. Bair has a clinical interest in diabetes, joint and trigger point injections, minor dermatological procedures and weight management.

Bair completed his residency in family medicine at St. Joseph Warren Hospital. He earned his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa.
