Timken opens Houston facility

North Canton-based Timken Co., which operates a plant in Niles, announced the opening of a new 27,000-square-foot state-of-the-art gear drive manufacturing facility in Houston.

Timken is a global manufacturer of bearings and related components and assemblies. The new Houston plant will improve production of the Philadelphia Gear brand high-speed drives, according to a company news release.

To meet growing demand, Timken Power Systems equipped the new facility with two 5-AXIS machines that employ gear milling technology instead of the traditional hobbing process. The machines can perform up to six different operations used to produce helical gears, shafts and pinions from raw material with the potential to reduce the OE production cycle by weeks.

The Niles plant, which employs about 40 people, services industrial operators by providing life-extending and wear-resistant surfaces for mechanical power train components.
