Gander Mountain looking to expand

HOWLAND – Gander Mountain Co. is looking to double the size of its store at the Eastwood Mall Complex.

Plans call for the store, which leases property from the Cafaro Co., to expand its business from its current site at state Route 46 and Mines Road SE to the adjacent structure, which formerly housed a Circuit City. The extension would result in a 61,320-square-foot space.

The company has asked Howland officials for signage and corner lot side yard variances.

Peter Ross, Howland zoning administrator, said the company submitted its plans to the township for consideration on April 14. A public hearing with the Howland Township Board of Zoning Appeals is scheduled for May 7.

Joe Bell, Cafaro Co.’s director of corporate communications, said the expansion is contingent upon the township’s decision. Bell said if the township gives its OK, the store would start the project almost immediately with demolition of the former Circuit City. The goal is for the store to re-open at its expanded location in time for the fall hunting season.

“Basically, the store is planning to take over the entire property, which would mean it would nearly double in size,” Bell said. “It would be redeveloping the entire site.”

The business would be moved across the parking lot to the former Linens & More for Less store, where it would continue operating until the renovations are done.

St. Paul, Minn.-based Gander Mountain Co. is a retail network of stores for hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor recreation products and services.
