Bishop George Murry has died, diocese announces
YOUNGSTOWN — The Diocese of Youngstown announced today that Bishop George V. Murry died this morning at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Kinnick Funeral Home.
Murry was only briefly admitted for inpatient treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for leukemia. He had asked Pope Francis for permission to resign as bishop because of health reasons.
Murry led the Youngstown diocese since 2007, the first African American and first minority bishop to hold the post.
Sloan Kettering Cancer Center provides for people with all types of cancer from the most common to the most rare.
Murry’s leukemia returned in April and he was receiving treatment as an outpatient at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown at that time.
