TTH lecture looks at Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War

Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War will be the topic of the next — and next-to-last — Trumbull Town Hall lecture.

Louis Masur, a professor of American Studies and History at Rutgers University, will share his expertise on the 16th president, who was born in humble circumstances and only had a year of formal schooling.

Lincoln struggled with mood swings and endured repeated political disappointments. Despite those obstacles, he became a prosperous lawyer, skilled debater, masterful writer and generally is ranked among the best U.S. presidents. A century and a half after his assassination, his life still offers critical lessons about leadership.

Masur is the author of three books on Lincoln and the Civil War as well as “Runaway Dream: Born to Run and Bruce Springsteen’s American Vision,” “The Soiling of Old Glory: The Story of a Photograph That Shocked America,” “Autumn Glory: Baseball’s First World Series,” “1831: Year of Eclipse” and “Rites of Execution: Capital Punishment and the Transformation of American Culture.”

The program starts at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Tickets are $35 and will be available at the door the morning of the program and in advance through Ticketmaster.

Organizers announced last year that the current season, its 47th, will be the final season for the lecture series. The final program will feature former Ohio State Buckeyes football coach, former Youngstown State University president and football coach and recent appointed Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel on April 30.

Starting at $2.99/week.
