YSO heading ‘Back to the Future’
Youngstown Symphony Orchestra is taking its musical Delorean back in time to 1985 for two performances accompanying the film “Back to the Future.”
The orchestra will perform Alan Silvestri’s score as the Robert Zemeckis film is shown at Powers Auditorium; however, the orchestra’s new conductor Sergey Bogza won’t be in the driver’s seat.
According to a press release from the Youngstown Symphony Society, Bogza is unable to be in Youngstown “due to personal matters.”
In his place will be Guest Conductor Erik Ochsner, who was one of the finalists to replace YSO Conductor and Music Director Randall Craig Fleischer, who died in 2020.
Ochsner conducted previous YSO concerts accompanying the films “Home Alone” and “Ghostbusters” as well as classical programs and a pops concert with Youngstown band The Vindys.
He is considered one of the leading film-with-live-orchestra conductors. Ochsner was principal touring conductor for “La La Land in Concert” and led more than 50 performances of Justin Hurwitz’s Oscar-winning score. He’s also conducted the premiere of “Mary Poppins in Concert” at Australia’s Sydney Opera House, “Love Actually” with the San Francisco Symphony and “Beauty and the Beast” in Taiwan, filling in for an ailing colleague with less than two-days notice.
“Back to the Future” was the top-grossing film of 1985, earning $190 million in theaters. It launched Michael J. Fox’s film career, won an Academy Award for sound effects editing and spawned two sequels as well as a Broadway musical.
Performances are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Powers Auditorium, 260 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Tickets range from $20 to $63 and are available at the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office, online at experienceyourarts.org and by calling 330-259-9651.
