YSU ensembles perform at Kilcawley Center

The Youngstown State University Jazz Ensemble and Contemporary Ensemble will perform 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Kent Engelhardt, will play music by Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones, Bob Mintzer and award-winning alumnus Bryan Kennard.

Kennard, who earned his master’s degree in flute performance in 2008, is an award-winning composer and flutist who recently completed his doctorate in jazz composition from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.

He is a writer, performer and educator in northeast Ohio and is on the adjunct faculty at YSU. His recent works include compositions for large and small jazz ensembles, chamber ensembles and full orchestra.

Kennard has performed at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals, the Jazz Educators Network Conference, the National Flute Association Convention, the International Double Reed Society Convention and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention.

The Jazz Ensemble’s program will include vocals by Noah Landry.

The Contemporary Ensemble, directed by John Anthony, will play music by Vulfpeck, Kamasi Washington and “Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and it will feature vocals by Audrey Jobe.

The concert is in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. Admission is free.
