Kent-Trumbull announces Young Playwrights Festival

CHAMPION — Kent State University at Trumbull is seeking short plays from area high school juniors and seniors.

The theater program is planning a Young Playwrights Festival in the spring. Students from Trumbull, Mahoning, Ashtabula, Geauga and Portage counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania are eligible to submit scripts that are about 15 to 20 pages long and have no more than five characters.

Scripts will be judged by theater professionals and faculty, and five or six students chosen will have their plays staged for local audiences at Kent-Trumbull the weekends of April 22-24 and April 29-May 1, 2022.

Students who submit plays also can be considered for renewable $2,000 scholarships for those interested in pursuing a degree in theater studies at Kent-Trumbull. Acting students can be considered for a scholarship by submitting an audition video with two contrasting monologues, and technical theater students can be considered by presenting a technical portfolio dealing their work in the theater.

According to Eric S. Kildow, professor and theater director, “We began offering the four-year degree in theatre studies a few years ago, and it continues to grow. These scholarships and the Young Playwrights Festival are great ways to encourage students to follow their dreams.”
