YSU theater opens with ‘Almost, Maine’

The romantic comedy “Almost, Maine” will open 2021-22 theater season at Youngstown State University.

It is the first of four productions planned for the main stage season.

Written by John Cariani, “Almost, Maine” is a series of nine vignettes set in Almost, Maine, a place that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada. And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So, it almost doesn’t exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways.

Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal and the hearts mend — almost — in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

Matthew Mazuroski directs a cast that features Elise Vargo, Westerville; Lexi Denney, Canfield; Hannah Rosser, Austintown; Nicolas Wix, Salem; John Bearss, Edinburg and Mitchell Sharp, Beloit.

Other main stage productions include the Alan Menken / Howard Ashman musical “Little Shop of Horrors,” a concert version of the Meredith Wilson musical “The Music Man” and the Harry Potter spoof “Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.”

According to said Stephanie Smith, chair of the department of visual and dramatic arts, “We are thrilled to return to the theater to offer our patrons the experience of live performances. Our students, faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to bring this season to life, and we encourage patrons to support our productions through a season subscription.”
