OWR looking for actors upcoming opera
Opera Western Reserve is seeking local actors for its upcoming production of “Romeo + Juliet.”
This re-imagined performance will combine text from Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet” and orchestral and vocal music from Charles Gounod’s opera “Romeo et Juliette,” sung in French.
The roles of Romeo and Juliet will be sung in the original French and cast with opera singers.
At auditions from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 and 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 10, OWR specifically is looking for actors for the roles of Paris, Abram, Capulet, Lady Capulet, Montague, Lady Montague, Nurse and Friar, which will perform Shakespeare monologues and dialogue in English.
Stage combat experience is preferred for actors auditioning for Paris and Abram.
Actors will be paid. Rehearsals start in October, and it will be staged with a reduced orchestra on Nov. 12 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, which also is the site for auditions.
Actors should prepare a short Shakespearian monologue and be prepared to read an excerpt from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in English, and should dress appropriately for movement.
OWR is casting performers of all ethnicities, gender identities and expressions, ages, abilities and body types for mainstage, spoken roles.
This fully staged production with costumes, lighting and digital scene design will feature sword fights choreographed by Jason Paul Tate, a New York City-based director, choreographer and performer whose credits include the Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park and the Metropolitan Opera.
The production is devised and directed by Scott Skiba, with guest conductor Dean Buck leading the OWR Orchestra.
