Online cabaret show features YSU students

“Feeling Good, Welcome to Spring” is the theme of a cabaret-style concert featuring Youngstown State University students that will debut Friday online.

This performance is the students’ final project from the newly established course “Singing Styles,” which encourages students to explore all types of singing beyond just musical theater. Students submitted three songs to a faculty panel, and one each was selected. The students then videotaped the selection, and those performances were assembled to create the concert.

According to Maria Fenty Denison, coordinator of the musical theater program, “Spring is renewal; it’s a time for a fresh start. This year more than ever in recent memory we need to celebrate. These songs make us happy. Our album is a collection of tunes, both classic and new, that help us recall many kinds of love, compel us to want to get outside and feel our toes in the grass, have faith in each other and just feel good.”

Featured songs and the students performing them include: “Feeling Good,” Torrance Bajuszik, Saxonburg, Pa.; “my future,” Lexi Denney, Canfield; “Canyon Moon,” by Lexi Cerny, Pittsburgh; “Change,” Elise Vargo, Westerville; “When You Say Nothing at All,” Samantha Gurd, Poland; “Mother Nature’s Son,” Meredith Pallo, Sharpsville, Pa.; “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” Mitchell Sharp, Beloit; “Like I Want You,” Destinee Thompson, Akron; “A Sunday Kind of Love,” Lacey Farina, Schenectady, N.Y.; “People Help the People,” Haley Tura, Canfield; “I Hope You Dance,” Belle Elliott, Indian Lake

The program will debut at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the Cliffe College YouTube channel and is free to view.
