Rock Hall screens documentary on ‘SOUL!’ program

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland will host an online screening at 7 p.m. today of the documentary “Mr. SOUL!,” followed by a post-screening discussion.

The movie tells the story of “SOUL!,” a variety show that ran on public television in the late 1960s and early ’70s. It was an unfiltered, uncompromising celebration of black culture, music, literature, poetry and politics and featured dazzling array of musical guests, including Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The movie will start at 7 p.m. online, followed by a discussion featuring LaBelle, Verdine White of EWF, director Melissa Haizlip and Rock Hall Chief Curator Nwaka Onwusa. Actor Blair Underwood, executive producer of the film, will introduce the panel and Stephanie Tavares-Rance, co-founder of Run&Shoot Filmworks, will moderate it. JCC presents online Q&A with filmmaker

As part of its Virtual Film Festival, the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will screen “On the Map” beginning Monday and present an online Q&A with director Dani Menkin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The 2016 documentary recounts the story of how one Tel Aviv basketball team that no one thought could win toppled the four-time defending European Champions and put Israel firmly on the map.

Regional talent will perform for Playhouse event

Playhouse Square Partners is replacing its annual Jump Back Ball fundraiser with a virtual cabaret featuring Broadway performers with northeast Ohio ties.

Performers for “Jump Back Together” will include Shaker Heights native Max Chernin (“Sunday in the Park with George,” “Bright Star”), Cleveland native and Baldwin Wallace University alumnus Warren Egypt Franklin (“Hamilton”), BW alumna Keri Rene Fuller (“Cats,” “Jagged Little Pill,” “Waitress”), Strongsville native and BW alumnus Corey Mach (“Flashdance the Musical,” “Godspell,” ” Kinky Boots,” “Rent,” “Wicked”), Cleveland native and BW alumna Nyla Watson (“The Color Purple,” “Wicked”), and Dee Roscioli (“Cats,” “The Cher Show,” “Wicked”).

“Jump Back Together” streams live at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 and will be available for 72 hours following the livestream. Tickets are $30 (with VIP tickets for $100 that include a Q&A with the performers) and are available online at playhousesquare.org.

All ticket buyers will have a chance to win Playhouse Square swag, and 100 percent of the proceeds benefit education programming at Playhouse Square.

Chagrin theater presents new musical online

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, in conjunction with Hudson Theatre Works of Weehawken, N.J., will present an online production of the new musical comedy “Elliot & Me.”

Written by Steven Willensky and Scott Coulter with music by Elliot Willensky, “Elliot & Me” is based on Willenskys’ real lives and their powerful bond. It focuses on songwriter Elliot and his younger brother Steven as they prepare to pitch their original two-man show to legendary Broadway producer Max Stone.

Both brothers reflect on the volatile ups and downs, from Elliot’s rise to stardom writing hits for the likes of Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston to needing his brother’s help after his career hits a few bumps.

“Elliot & Me” will be available to stream at CVLT.org from 6 p.m. today until midnight Sunday. Tickets are $20.
