Ky’Lyntae creates digital ‘Fest’

When his festival gigs disappeared, rapper Ky’Lyntae decided to bring the festival online.

The EP “Ky’Ly Fest” debuted Friday on Spotify, iTunes and other music streaming sites.

“I started the process on this one as soon as I realized I wouldn’t be able to do shows for the summer,” the Warren native said.

The 22-minute release includes a couple of singles that had been released previously and some live snippets as well as several tracks that were recorded in a quick three-day session.

“The idea was, ‘It’s a festival — fun, exciting, uptempo,'” said Ky’Lyntae, whose full name is Ky’Lyntae Mostella. “That’s why we wanted to go more uptempo, to get people out of that funk. Being locked in the house can be boring and depressing.”

He believes “Worth Sumn,” a collaboration with rapper HowFly, has the most commercial potential.

“It has a really good beat, a really commercial sound,” he said. “It could be played on radio instantly, very upbeat. With Tik Tok and everyone doing these 10-, 20-second dance songs, it kind of fits that profile.”

Ky’Lyntae worked with fellow 2007 Warren G. Harding High School graduate Chris Cargill as producer on many of the tracks.

“He’s pretty much my right hand man. We’ve had a lot of the same successes with him as the producer and me as the artist. He’s really, really good at producing, which makes it easier for me.”

“Ky’Ly Fest” is planned only as a digital EP for now, although some of the track make be included on a vinyl release Ky’Lyntae would like to put out before the end of the year.

Also in the works is a podcast to help build his online following. The first episode will be recorded next week and released in May.

Having a home studio gives him a creative outlet to keep making music, but Ky’Lyntae said he misses performing live.

“At this point we’re just taking it as it comes. We got work we probably won’t be able to do any shows for the entire year, depending upon how quickly things can clear up.”
