Hopewell stages ‘Deathtrap’

Earned a Tony nomination for Best Play in 1978

The comedy thriller “Deathtrap” opens Friday at Hopewell Theatre.

Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell that has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from one of his students — a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash hit.

Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? “Deathtrap” provides twists, turns and surprises.

Written by Ira Levin, “Deathtrap” earned a Tony nomination for Best Play in 1978 and spawned a film version with Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve in 1982.

Nick Mulichak and Regina Rees direct the Hopewell production, which features Terry Shears as playwright Sidney Bruhl, John Monroe as student and aspiring playwright Clifford Anderson, Brenda Zyvith as the long-suffering Myra Bruhl, Terri Wilkes as Dutch psychic Helga Ten Dorp and Bill Rees as stuffy lawyer Porter Milgram.

The play features adult themes, gunshots and some physical violence.

“Deathtrap” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through March 8 at Hopewell Theatre, 702 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens and are available online at www.hopewelltheatre.org and by calling 330-746-5455.
