Top Hat stages ‘Sister Act’

Top Hat Productions opens its 2019-20 season with the musical “Sister Act.”

The musical comedy is based on the 1992 movie of the same name about Deloris Van Cartier, a club singer who witnesses a murder committed by her mobster boyfriend. After reporting the crime, she is sent into protective custody at a convent disguised as a nun, a dramatic change from her old lifestyle.

The one thing that bonds Deloris with the real nuns is music, and she adds a pop edge to the choir’s traditional repertoire of hymns.

The musical features original songs by Oscar and Tony award-winning composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast”). “Sister Act” ran for 561 performances on Broadway and received five 2011 Tony nominations, including one for best musical.

The cast for the Top Hat production stars Nikita R. Jones as Deloris and includes Brandy Johanntges, Brian Palumbo, Courtney Bailey, Julie DeSalvo, Brittany Storey, Denise Sybelink, Julie Palumbo Villa, Emma Wason, Terri Wilkes, Taeshawn Madison, Isaiah Shelton, Bret Vandermark, John Weber and Tylor Zuniga.

“Sister Act” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Nov. 9 at Fairview Arts & Outreach Center, 4220 Youngstown Poland Road, Youngstown. Tickets are $17.50 for adults and $15.50 for senior citizens and are available online at www.brownpapertickets.com and by calling 800-838-3006.
