‘Mamma Mia!” coming to Ashtabula

G.B. Community Theatre stages “Mamma Mia!” for a three-weekend run at the Ashtabula Arts Center starting Friday.

The show is built around the music of ’70s dance pop hitmakers ABBA and features such songs as “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper,” “SOS,” “The Winner Takes It All” and the title song.

The musical ran for 5,758 performances and nearly 14 years on Broadway and spawned a 2008 film version that earned more than $600 million internationally.

It tells the story of Sophie (played by Rachel Tackett), who goes on a mission to discover the identity of her father before her marriage to Sky (Nathan Lowery). Unbeknownst to her mother, Donna (Trisha Lawrie), Sophie contacts three men from her mother’s past (Derek Lebzelter, Christopher Nappi, Max Seymour) and invites them to her wedding, hoping to learn which one is really her father.

The musical — with music and lyrics Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and a book by Catherine Johnson — is directed by Kimberly Godfrey with musical direction by Debra Fleming.

“Mamma Mia” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 27 at the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students, senior citizens and military and $11 for children ages 2 to 11 if purchased in advance and $17, $15 and $13 the day of the show.
