Indian musician plays Youngstown

Musicians Harsh Narayan from India and Joe Culley from Kent will perform Friday at the Calvin Center for the Arts.

Narayan, who lives in Mumbai, is a leading sarangi player and performer of Hindustani classical music. His grandfather, Pandit Ram Narayan, brought the sarangi, a short-necked string instrument played with a bow, to the forefront of classical music in that country.

Narayan’s debut solo album, “Scintillating Sarangi,” was released in 2016. His music was featured in the score for the film “Queen of Katwe,” starring Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo.

Culley is a percussionist whose focused his career in the last two decades on the tabla drums of India and has performed with many leading musicians from India.

The hourlong concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the center, 755 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and are available through Eventbrite.
