Contest brings local art to WRTA buses

Power of the Arts, an arts advocacy nonprofit, is hosting a series of art contests with the winning images displayed on the outside of WRTA buses.

Artists of any age who live in Trumbull or Mahoning County are eligible to submit their work. The contest is free, thanks to sponsors from throughout the community, according to Power of the Arts coordinator Karen Schubert.

“Some of the sponsors wished to champion particular artists, so there is a range of opportunities,” Schubert said. “For example, Trumbull New Theatre will sponsor an artist from Niles, giving preference to a theater theme. Easter Seals invites artists to work on a project with their clients, adults and children with disabilities. Timbre is interested in a collaboration of students working together. And Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Youngstown Alumnae Chapter, will sponsor an African-American female artist working in any medium to depict the Harlem Renaissance.”

The contests will be judged by local artists. Winning images will receive a $100 honorarium and artists will be invited to a reception where they will meet their sponsors. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, a sponsor, will also host the reception and display the winning images for the public.

The sizes of the projects vary, from 21 inches by 59 inches to a full wrap, which will completely cover the bus (passengers will see through the windows). Art will be on buses in spring or summer for at least a month.

Additional sponsors are Cultivate: a Co-op Cafe; Jet Creative; Mahoning County Land Bank; Lit Youngstown; Mahoning County Career & Technical Center; McKinley Memorial Museum; SMARTS: Students Motivated by the Arts; Alexis Smith, D.O.; The Soap Gallery; The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation; Youngstown CityScape, YNDC; and YWCA of Mahoning Valley.

Power of the Arts hopes that the project will be taken up in classrooms through the Valley, Schubert said. Artists are limited to one submission per contest, but may submit to more than one contest if they qualify. Entries are not limited to 2D work such as drawing, painting, photography and collage. Sculpture and ceramics and other 3D media may also be photographed and entered.

More information and instructions for electronically submitting work can be found at PowerOfTheArts.org. Questions may be addressed to poa.infor@gmail.com.
