Warren church honors veterans with exhibit
WARREN — Grace Methodist Church has added a special display honoring veterans of the congregation.
The idea for the veterans memorial wall came from member Garey Watson of Cortland, who said there was previously a smaller display.
“We wanted to update what we had here. There will be the names of all the veterans from the church which goes back to World War I. We already have 85 names,” Watson said.
Bob Woofter of Cortland is helping with the effort after Watson reached out to him knowing he makes plaques and trophies.
He said Woofter has made plaques for many years and agreed to help with the two large plaques with all the veterans’ names engraved.
“I was happy to be able to help,” Woofter said.
Watson said each veteran has their name, branch of service and years they served listed on the plaques.
He said the church became Global Methodist and an older plaque says United Methodist, which the church no longer is. Watson said they had to remove all United Methodist names from items at the church.
“We will add names of veterans and other plaques to the display,” Watson said.
Woofter said there is room for more names to be engraved on the plaque. He said he will make additional plaques for more names if needed.
Watson said most of the veterans listed are deceased.
He said the church recognizes veterans with special services and events at Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
The Rev. Barry French, church pastor, also has supported the effort by the congregation to recognize veterans.
