NUTRITION SITES AVAILABLE: The Trumbull County Nutrition Program for the Elderly is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs and operates nutrition sites at seven locations in the county. Meals will be delivered to county residents 60 and older who are homebound, unable to cook for themselves and not living with someone who can cook for them. Client donations are accepted. The menu is:

• Today: Sliced turkey with gravy, whipped potatoes, mixed vegetables, wheat bread, peaches, angel food cake;

• Tuesday: Pot roast with gravy, parsley butter whole potatoes, mixed vegetables, dinner roll, pineapple, ice cream;

• Wednesday: Sliced ham with pineapple, mashed sweet potatoes, peas, wheat bread, fresh apple, angel food cake;

• Thursday: Meatballs with sauce, penne with sauce, green beans, side salad with Italian dressing, dinner roll, mixed fruit, cookie;

TOUR INFORMATION: Trumbull County SCOPE will host two tour and travel informational workshops on March 9.

The first workshop that day will be at 4 p.m. at the Warren Senior Center, 375 North Park Ave. The second workshop will be at 6 p.m. at the Niles Senior Center at 14 E. State St. Participants only need to attend one session.

For those who attend, a raffle will take place at each workshop for a $50 credit toward any SCOPE trip in 2022.

John Sinclair, SCOPE’s travel coordinator, as well as Jim Ezzo, SCOPE’s tour specialist, will review the schedule of planned one-day and two-day trips for the 2022 tour season. They also will review the safety protocols taken due to the coronavirus, as well as tips for taking tours and travel.

RETIREES TO MEET: Howland Schools Retirees will resume monthly lunch meetings following a winter hiatus at 11:30 a.m. March 1 at Enzo’s Restaurant. All classified and nonclassified retired school employees and their spouses or guests are welcome to attend the monthly lunches.

Cost of the lunch, payable at the door, is $15 for your choice from four entrees offered. Call Mary at 330-856-0483 by the Saturday prior to the meeting if you plan to attend so proper seating can be arranged.

There are no dues collected except for people who want to receive the newsletters. Breakfast / granola bars will be collected for the Howland High School Paws Pantry.

HOSPITAL RETIREES TO MEET: St. Joseph Warren Hospital Retirees will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Wayside Restaurant in Champion. Retired and former employees from St. Joseph or Warren General Hospital are welcome to attend. Attendees are requested to bring nonperishable items for food bank donation.

ALZHEIMER’S NEW FACEBOOK: The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter has launched a new Facebook series to help Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers.

The Facebook Caregiver Corner Series focuses on a series of topics with a question-and-answer period about topics ranging from how to care for oneself as a caregiver, how to address eating and nutrition issues for your loved one and traveling with the loved one. The sessions, which are free, are broadcast the last Thursday of each month at noon on the Association’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/alzgeoac. The next Caregiver Corner will be at noon on March 31.

AEROBICS SURVEY: Through a grant from the Mercy Health Foundation, SCOPE Senior Services has an opportunity to host additional free fitness classes such as aerobics and Zumba. SCOPE would like to know what time of day — from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. — which center — Cortland, Howland, Newton Falls, Niles or Warren — and which day(s) of the week or weekend those who wish to participate would choose. Participants can select either aerobics or Zumba or types of classes.

Mercy Health will pay for and provide the instructors for these classes if enough seniors participate.

DANCING SURVEY: SCOPE Senior Services has announced the opportunity to have line dancing and / or ballroom style dancing on the wooden floor gymnasium at the Warren Senior Citizen Center located in the YWCA building, 375 N. Park Ave.

SCOPE is partnering with Artistically U Dance Studio to provide instructors for line dancing as well as ballroom dance classes for mature citizens. There will be a small instructor charge per class.

SCOPE is conducting a survey and would like to know what time of day and which days of the week or weekend seniors would be most interested. Respondents should let SCOPE know if they want a beginner class or a regular session, as well as whether their interest is for line dance or ballroom style.

WARREN SCOPE OFFERS PROGRAMS: The Warren SCOPE Center, 375 N. Park Ave., offers an indoor walking fitness area 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. The indoor facility provides music thanks to the HChoice health program through its isolation and loneliness initiative. SCOPE provides an incentive of gift cards for seniors who walk 50 miles.

The Center offers a SilverSneakers FLEX fitness session 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays. The SilverSneakers FLEX stretch class is offered at noon on Tuesdays.

Senior citizens who are Medicare-eligible can take classes for free. Non-SilverSneakers members pay $2 per class. For more information or to register for classes or lunch, call 330-399-8846.

FALL PREVENTION GUIDE: The Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS joined with the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership and released an updated “Elderly Fall Prevention Resource Guide” for EMS providers and the general public.

• All American USA Taxi, 330-395-3226, for nonwheelchair rides 10 miles or less;

• Garwin Inc., 330-534-1335, for nonwheelchair rides 10 miles or less.

CORTLAND SENIOR CENTER: The Cortland Area Senior Citizen Center, located at Cortland Christian Church, 153 Grove Drive, is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with activities such as cards, fitness, board games, puzzles, coloring, arts and crafts, and walking, along with free coffee for visitors.

Lunches are served around noon. Make a reservation three days in advance by calling 330-509-2415 or by stopping by the center. Cost is $3 for those 60 and older and $6 for people younger than 60. No carryouts are available.

JOHNSTON CENTER: The Johnston Senior Center, 5922 state Route 5 in Johnston is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. To reserve a lunch, call two business days in advance 330-924-0412 or 330-675-2486. Cost is $2.25 for Trumbull County residents 60 and older and / or their spouse.

Classes include yoga, dance and flexibility, and a variety of others, all which can be modified to meet seniors at their level of capability. Bingo is held weekly. Stop in or call 330-924-0412 to reserve a spot. Chair massages by appointment start at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays for $1 a minute from Living Wellness Holistic.

The center and the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs have resumed the congregate lunch program and include the “grab-n-go” lunch.

FALLS CENTER OFFERS LUNCH: SCOPE relocated a senior center to the recently purchased Newton Falls Village Building, 612 W. Broad St., where hot lunches are offered to senior citizens.

To eat, people need to call the center two days in advance at 330-306-9577. There is no charge for the meals but participants are asked to provide a donation. Meals are served noon Monday to Friday. Due to limits on indoor seating, reserved meals may also be packaged up for carryout.

The center is open for a wide variety of activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Masking and social distancing rules are followed.

FOOD DELIVERY: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio is partnering with various agencies for Families First Coronavirus Response Act funding for no-contact food deliveries to seniors 60 and older:

MEMORY SCREENINGS VIRTUAL: The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering a free virtual memory screening. Appointments can be scheduled by calling AFA at 866-232-8484 or by visiting www.alzfdn.org. Screenings are conducted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through secure videoconference. There are no minimum age or insurance prerequisites.

VOLUNTEER PACKERS / DRIVERS NEEDED: Trumbull Mobile Meals delivers meals five days a week to Trumbull County residents who are homebound. The agency needs volunteer packers and volunteer drivers.

Volunteer cold packers help pack cold meals, 8:15 to 11 a.m., and volunteer hot packers pack meals from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers deliver between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Anyone who can spare an hour or two once a week or even just once a month is invited to help.

OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio is looking for volunteers to join the Ombudsman Program to advocate for excellence for those living in long-term care facilities.

Ombudsman help ensure that residents of long-term care facilities receive quality care and treatment. Volunteers will make phone calls and virtual visits to residents.

RSVP is a national service program for individuals 55 and older who want to volunteer in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These volunteers will also assist with community events.

The Senior Support Action Group is a coalition of community partners working together to assist the seniors in the Valley with access to food, transportation to medical appointments and companionship through the Phone Pals program.

SCSEP OFFERS TRAINING: SCOPE Senior Service Centers have been providing host job sites along with other nonprofits in the area for the Vantage Aging Senior Community Service Employment Program. This program offers paid job training and placement to low-income adults 55 and older.
