SENIOR VOLUNTEERS: The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Mahoning Valley is looking for volunteers who wish to be part of this organization. For information, contact Leah at 330-480-0352, Ext. 3.

RSVP is a national service program for individuals 55 and older who want to volunteer in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These volunteers will also assist with community events.

The Senior Support Action Group is a coalition of community partners working together to assist the seniors in the valley with access to food, transportation, to medical appointments, companionship, through the Phone Pals program.

SCOPE PARTNERS WITH H-CHOICES: SCOPE Senior Services is partnering with Steve Pelton of HChoices’s with online programming for senior citizens. The We Thrive Together social isolation and loneliness initiative have been providing online educational and health classes during the COVID-19 crisis to senior citizens in the Mahoning Valley.

MEDICARE CHECK-UP FOR SENIORS: The deadline to change Medicare Advantage managed-care plans and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans is Dec. 7, and changes are effective Jan. 1.

Staff at Direction Home of Eastern Ohio offers free telephone or video Medicare check-ups to discuss plans and what’s different for the coming year. Certified staff will review medications, doctors and pharmacies and offer a comparison on plans that provide coverage.

Direction Home staff do not sell insurance and only provide information to you.

NUTRITION SITES AVAILABLE: The Trumbull County Nutrition Program for the Elderly is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs and operates nutrition sites at seven locations in the county. Meals will be delivered to county residents 60 and older who are homebound, unable to cook for themselves and not living with someone who can cook for them. Client donations are accepted. For information, call 330-675-2486. Reservations must be made by 2 p.m. two working days in advance.

The menu is:

• Today — White chicken chili, biscuit, confetti corn, warm peaches and pudding;

• Monday — Mushroom Swiss burger, au gratin potatoes, lima beans, sandwich bun, Swiss cheese, pears and ice cream;

• Tuesday — Mango barbecue chicken breast, brown rice, island blend vegetables, dinner roll, sweet and sour coleslaw, pineapple tidbits and cookie;

• Wednesday — Pot roast with gravy, parsley buttered whole potatoes, mixed vegetables, mixed fruit and pudding;

• Thursday — Crab cake, cheesy twists, baked beans, sandwich bun, Mandarin oranges and cookie;

• Nov. 6 — Rotisserie chicken with gravy, whipped potatoes, glazed carrots, dinner roll, fresh fruit and mini muffin.

SCSEP OFFERS TRAINING: SCOPE Senior Services Centers have been providing host job sites along with other nonprofits in the area for the Vantage Aging Senior Community Service Employment Program. This program offers paid job training and placement to low-income adults 55 and older.

Besides age, requirements are to be unemployed and looking for training for a job. For additional information or to receive an application, call Vantage Aging at 330-782-0978 or SCOPE Senior Services at 330-399-8846.

The SCSEP is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Ohio Department of Aging.

SCOPE CONSULTATIONS: SCOPE Senior Services offers free consultations during the COVID-19 crisis on reviewing changes to retirement health insurance.

For issues or questions dealing with Medicare, prescriptions and hospitalization benefits, call Debbie Zador at the Warren Senior Center at 330-399-8846, Ext. 202. She is also handling those with governmental plans such as PERS and SERS where retirees must also review their benefits on a yearly basis.

GIRARD CENTER: Participation in programs at the Girard Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave., is by telephone appointment only. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for participants with fitness room appointments Monday through Friday. Coffee bar and mind exercises will be in the gym at 9 a.m., and stretching class will be in the gym at 9:30.

Coffee bar, mind exercises and stretching class will be held in person on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. There will be virtual programming on Thursdays. The computer cafe will be available between 1:15 and 4 p.m. five days a week. One-on-one supportive service appointments will be scheduled by telephone.

Participants are asked not to arrive more than 10 minutes prior to their appointment.

FOOD DELIVERY: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio is partnering with various agencies for Families First Coronavirus Response Act funding for no-contact food deliveries to seniors 60 and older:

OMBUDSMEN NEEDED: Direction Home of Eastern Ohio, formerly Area Agency on Aging 11, is looking for ombudsman volunteers who are willing to advocate for residents and families during this time of isolation and separation that has been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

SCOPE SERVICES: While all SCOPE Senior Services centers remain closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, fitness classes continue via Zoom teleconference.

ALZHEIMER HELP ONLINE: The Alzheimer’s Association’s online Community Resource Finder at alz.org/crf provides ZIP code area-specific information on topics such as care at home, community services, and housing options.

In Ohio, the Alzheimer’s Association offers numerous caregiver support groups, which have shifted to a virtual platform. In addition, a number of dial-in telephone support groups have been added for additional support.
