Mr. and Mrs. Edwin M. and Helen S. Ballas of Newton Falls celebrated their 65th anniversary on Jan. 24, 2014, with a dinner and musical play at the Dutch Village Inn in Columbiana, hosted by their family.
Edwin Ballas and the former Helen Smith were married on Jan. 15, 1949, in Newton Falls.
Edwin was employed for 36 years by Republic Steel in Warren as a carpenter. He retired in 1986.
He serves as a Sunday school teacher at First Church of God Newton Falls, and is a member of the Democratic Club, a precinct committeeman, is serving his 16th year on Newton Falls Board of Education, and is a past president of Steelworkers Union Local 1089.
Helen also retired in 1986, from Quality Control at General Electric in Warren, after 34 years of service. She is activity coordinator for the Golden Agers at the church.
They are members of First Church of God Newton Falls and past members of Lake Milton Boat Club.
The couple have five children, Sherry (Ed) Freisen of Newton Falls, Linda Ballas of Toledo, Cindy (Gary) Ballas Gray of Cortland, and John David Ballas and Ronald E. Ballas, both deceased. They also have three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
