OctoBREWfest serves up seasonal ales

The founders of the Big Tap In will focus on firkins and fall seasonal craft beers at the first OctoBREWfest.

A firkin is a cask smaller than the traditional beer keg, and cask ales by definition are unfiltered and unpasteurized real ales that are gravity fed; they have no nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure added.

Organizers Phill and Sandy Reda, owners of Vintage Estate Wine and Beer and Magic Tree Pub and Eatery (both in Boardman), will have more than 30 specially brewed cask ales available at the event along with other fall, harvest and pumpkin beers.

They also have partnered with 30-Mile Meal, a group devoted to promoting locally sourced food and farms, to offer a farmer’s market as part of the event that will feature The Sprouted Table, Field Fresh Farm, Pancake Maples, Conkle Family Farms, Dandelion Lane Farm, Her Primitive Ways, Countryside Farm Market and The Way Nature. Among the offerings will be specialty frankfurters to go with the beer and other food pairings.

Entertainment will include traditional German music and polka bands as well as a stein hoist competition.

OctoBREWfest runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Shepherd Event Center, 7469 South Ave., Boardman. Tickets are $58 and are available at Vintage Estates and online at www.octobrewfest.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Making Kids Count.
