Wilkes 70th

Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Wilkes will celebrate their 70th anniversary on May 29, 2013.

Mr. Wilkes and the former Dorothy Jean Hefner were married May 29, 1943, by the Rev. George Van Wingerden in Cortland Christian Church.

Mr. Wilkes served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, with the Naval Amphibious Forces aboard the LSM15. He received four battle stars.

Richard was a self-employed well driller and pump contractor for 30 years before retiring in 1979. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7614 and Cortland Moose Lodge 1012. He also spends much of his time woodworking.

Mrs. Wilkes was employed by Mullins Manufacturing and Linville Clothing. She was also secretary and bookkeeper for the family business. Dorothy enjoys crocheting, sewing, painting and cooking for her family.

The couple have four children: Richard (Sue) Wilkes of Warren, James (Donna) Wilkes of Cortland, Dona (Larry) Phillips of Johnson, and Barbara Ann, deceased. They also have three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
