HBO biofilm leads light week for DVDs

It’s a very light week for new releases. Here’s what’s coming on DVD and Blu-ray:

“Hemingway & Gellhorn” – This made-for-HBO feature arrived on cable with an impressive pedigree with Clive Owen playing Ernest Hemingway and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman playing his wife Martha Gellhorn in a drama directed by Philip Kaufman (“The Right Stuff”). The movie, which picked up several Emmy nominations but received mixed reviews when it appeared on cable, chronicles their tumultuous marriage, Gellhorn’s career as a war correspondent and Hemingway’s as an author.

Extras include a commentary track and the featurettes “Inside Hemingway & Gellhorn” and “Visual Effects Piece.” (HBO Films, $19.97 DVD, $24.99 Blu-ray)

“Luv” – Common stars as an ex-con looking to go straight. But when his efforts to secure a legitimate loan to finance a restaurant, old temptations resurface in a story that plays out over one day while Common’s character is accompanied by his 11-year-old nephew. Danny Glover, Dennis Haysbert and Charles S. Dutton co-star. (Indomina, $19.97 DVD)

“John Dies at the End” – Don Coscarelli (“Phantasm,” “Bubba Ho-Tep”) directed this adaptation of David Wong’s cult novel about a couple of slackers who get involved with a mind-altering drug known as soy sauce, that also seems to be triggering an invasion of creatures from the underworld. Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown and Glynn Turman star. (Magnolia Home Entertainment, $26.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

“The Sweeney” – The title refers to an elite London police squad, led by Ray Winstone, that is charged with stopping armed robberies. And Winstone’s character is willing to stretch the boundaries of what’s legal and what’s illegal to stop an elusive criminal and a bank heist in this British crime drama co-starring Damian Lewis, Ben Drew and Hayley Atwell. (Entertainment One, $19.98 DVD, $24.98 Blu-ray)

“The Baytown Outlaws” – Eva Longoria and Billy Bob Thornton trash it up as warring ex-spouses fighting over a child. After Billy Bob tries to kill her, Eva hires three southern outlaws to retrieve the boy and dispatch with her ex. Clayne Crawford, Travis Fimmel and Daniel Cudmore play the crazy Oodie brothers, and the film co-stars Andre Braugher, Michael Rappaport and Zoe Bell. (Phase 4 Films, $29.99 DVD or Blu-ray)
