SounDoctrine brings jazz to Sunday nights
The band SounDoctrine and the Lemon Grove Cafe are teaming to create a regular home for jazz in downtown Youngstown.
The first “Second Sundays with SounDoctrine” is planned this weekend at the venue, according to SounDoctrine’s Jere B.
The band has been touring regularly outside of the area, he said, “But we needed some consistency in regards to our hometown.”
And an annual showcase with the Youngstown Jazz Fest wasn’t enough. SounDoctrine’s experience with that festival has given the band an opportunity to make connections with national jazz acts, and in future months the group hopes to feature a mix of local and national acts at the venue.
Jere B said they picked the second Sunday of the month for the event in part because he liked the sound of Second Sundays with SounDoctrine, but the day of the week and the late afternoon starting time made sense for a lot of reasons.
“We wanted to make it convenient for people,” he said. “They are getting out of church, and going to dinner after church, looking for a place to go … And for the early risers, those who have to get up early for work on Monday, you can get out of there at a decent time. Even if you’re coming from Warren or Columbiana, we play from 4 to 7 (p.m.), and you can be back home by 8 and ready for Monday.”
SounDoctrine also will pick a different charity each month that will benefit from the proceeds from the band’s CD sales. The recipient for February will be Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, Jere B said.
The first concert will feature SounDoctrine along with smooth jazz artist Jim Couchenour from Colum-biana, whose music has been featured on The Weather Channel since 2008. He will be joined by vocalist Natalie Sprouse, winner of the 2012 DeYor Singing Star competition. She recently released her debut CD, “Queen Bee.”
“Second Sundays with SounDoctrine” runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Lemon Grove, 110 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Admission is $5, and a buffet-style menu prepared by Guy’s BBQ will be available for purchase.
