Sisters bring their act to Cleveland

The musical “Sister Act” opens Tuesday for a two-week run at the Palace Theatre.

Based on the 1992 movie hit starring Whoopi Goldberg, “Sister Act” is the story of a club singer who witnesses a mob murder. The cops put her in protective custody in the last place anyone would think to look for her – a convent. As she battles with the rigid rules of her new home, she also revitalizes the convent’s choir. But the success of the choir risks exposing her cover.

The stage version features the music of Alan Menken, an eight-time Oscar winner for his work on such Disney films as “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The Broadway version was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book.

The touring production stars Ta’Rea Campbell as the club singer Deloris. Campbell’s Broadway credits include “The Lion King,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “The Book of Mormon” and “Leap of Faith.” Euclid native Hollis Resnik, who’s appeared in national tours for “Les Miserables” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” returns to northeast Ohio to play the Mother Superior.

“Sister Act” runs Tuesday through March 17 at the Palace Theatre, Playhouse Square, 1519 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets range from $10 to $75. Visit the website www.playhousesquare.org or call 216-241-6000.
