Playhouse offers youth theater classes

The Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre is offering three theater classes during its winter session.

Classes meet for six consecutive Saturdays beginning Feb. 2 at the Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane, Youngstown.

Actress / choreographer Kayla Boye (“Chicago”, assistant choreographer of the Playhouse’s upcoming “Legally Blonde”) will conduct “Choreography for Musical Theatre” for students in grades 7 through 12. Participants will be introduced to the dance styles of three very influential choreographers – Agnes DeMille (“Oklahoma!”, “Carousel”), Jerome Robbins (“West Side Story”) and Bob Fosse (“Sweet Charity”) and have the opportunity to learn a signature piece by each choreographer, showcasing what they learned at the final session. It will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m., and the cost is $65.

Actor / director Dylan White (“Romeo and Juliet”) will lead a class for students in grades 7 through 12 titled “Scene Study I.” Participants in this class will learn the basics of selecting and preparing a scene, including blocking, character interpretation and some auditioning techniques. It will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m., and the cost is $65.

Playwright Bernie Appugliese will offer “What A Character!” for students in grades 4 to 6. Young people new to the theater will be introduced to the basics of creative dramatics through creative writing. “What A Character!” meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and the cost is $55 per child.
