MVFC honors four for YSU
Youngstown State landed four players on the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s preseason all-league team, which was announced Monday.
The offensive line was well represented with center Vitas Hrynkiewicz and tackle Justin Spencer each earning first-team honors for the Penguins, the FCS runners-up last year.
On defense, linebacker Armand Dellovade was named to the first team, and on special teams, Mahoning Valley native and sophomore punter Mark Schuler, a Springfield High School graduate, earned first-team honors.
Hrynkiewicz and Spencer were starters on an offensive line that paved the way for one of the most potent rushing attacks in the nation last year. Dellovade led YSU with 105 tackles (70 solo stops), and Schuler owned a 42.5-yard average on punts, with 15 boots of 50-plus yards.
The reigning MVFC co-champions, North Dakota State and South Dakota State, had the most honorees, with 10 selections each, including nine first-team picks for the Jackrabbits. Each team in the MVFC had at least two selections.
The MVFC will announce its preseason poll today.
The Penguins, who finished third in the MVFC last year, open preseason camp Aug. 3. They start the season Sept. 2 at Pittsburgh.
