Postseason starts well thanks to Canfield

Congratulations to the Canfield Cardinals wrestling team which last week became the first area team to advance to the dual team wrestling state tournament.

The Cardinals defeated West Branch and Louisville in the Division II regional last week and will compete next Sunday (Feb. 11) in the state quarterfinals at St. John Arena in Columbus.

The dual team tournament, now in its sixth season, kicks off the winter sports postseason, which gets going in earnest later today when the girls basketball district brackets are released.

Canfield is seeded fourth of the eight teams at Columbus in Division II and will face fifth-seeded Urichsville Claymont in the quarterfinal round. Top-seeded Wauseon is in the Cardinals’ half of the bracket. Mentor Lake Catholic is seeded second and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary is third.

Meanwhile, girls basketball coaches in northeast Ohio have been voting online for seeding in the upcoming tournament. Those results will be released today at 5 p.m., according to the Northeast District Athletic Board website (nedab.org).

Sectional games again will be played at the site of the better-seeded team. In Divisions I and II, the first two rounds are scheduled Saturday, Feb. 17 and Thursday, Feb. 22. In III and IV, sectional games are scheduled Wednesday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 24.

District games are scheduled at neutral sites. According to the district website, Divisions I and II play district games Monday, Feb. 26 and Thursday, March 1. Divisions III and IV district games are scheduled Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 3.

Boys basketball seedings and brackets are due to be released next Sunday, Feb. 11. Sectional games are scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 27 and Friday, March 2 in Divisions II, III and IV. In Division I, sectional games will be Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 3.

District finals for boys will be Friday, March 9, in Divisions III and IV, and Saturday, March 10 in Divisions I and II.

The postseason for area swimmers and divers begins this week with sectional meets. Division I teams go to either the University of Akron or C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton for sectional action. In Division II, area athletes compete at Akron or the Spire Institute in Geneva.

The swimming district event is scheduled Feb. 16-17 at Cleveland State with the state meet Feb. 21-24 at Canton.

The bowling postseason gets started in the area on Sunday, Feb. 11 when most area Division II teams roll in the sectional at Holiday Bowl in Struthers. D-II bowlers from Lakeview, Champion and Maplewood roll their sectional at Wickliffe Lanes on Saturday, Feb. 17. The area Division I sectional is the next day at Boardman Lanes.

The district tournaments are at Wedgewood Lanes in Austintown, with Division II rolling Saturday, Feb. 24 and Division I competing Sunday, Feb. 25.

That same weekend, on Saturday, the individual wrestling tournament starts. Area Division I schools compete at Massillon Perry, Division II teams to to West Branch and Division III teams are at Rootstown or Beachwood.

District wrestling meets are March 2-3 at North Canton Hoover (D-I), Alliance (D-II) and Garfield Heights (D-III).
