Pairings due out today for football playoffs

Though the official pairings will come out later this afternoon when the Ohio High School Athletic Association releases them, high school football fans throughout Ohio have been poring over the ratings at the web site to see who their favorite team plays when the posteason begins later this week.

Before we get into the football pairings, congratulations are in order for three Trumbull County soccer teams that will be playing in regional competition. The Howland and Champion girls teams will play regional semifinal games on Tuesday and the Lakeview boys will play on Wednesday.

Also, the county is sending its usual large contingent of runners to the state tournament on Saturday.

Congratulations to all who are still alive in their respective sport and good luck at the next level.

As far as football goes, Divisions I, II, IV and VI will be playing on Friday nights throughout the postseason. Saturday games will be played by Divisions III, V and VII.

Warren G. Harding (9-1) unofficially finished in third place in Division II, Region 5 and will play host to Brecksville-Broadview Heights (8-2).

Other Friday night action will take place in Division IV, Region 13 where Hubbard (8-2) finished sixth and will play at No. 3 Cardinal Mooney (7-2). Struthers (9-1) is in fifth place and will play at No. 4 Woodridge (10-0).

Lakeview just missed out on the playoffs after its 6-4 finish. The Bulldogs were awaiting the result of a Saturday game, Elyria Catholic vs. Gilmour Academy. When Elyria Catholic won, that vaulted Parma Heights Holy Name ahead of the Bulldogs into the eighth and final postseason position in Region 13.

That result also pushed Garfield ahead of Gilmour into the eighth spot in Division V, Region 17. The G-Men (7-3) will face the unenviable task of visiting top-ranked South Range (9-1).

LaBrae (7-3) is ranked fourth in that region and will play host to Wickliffe (8-2). Grand Valley (9-1) wound up in second place in the region and plays at home against Sullivan Black River (7-3).

In Division III, Region 9, Howland (7-3) is in seventh place and will play at No. 2 Akron Hoban (9-1).

John F. Kennedy (9-1) also is in third in Division VII, Region 25. The Eagles will play at home against Toronto (8-2). Two other area teams qualified in that region with Windham (7-3) in fifth place and visiting No. 4 Monroeville (9-1) and Jackson-Milton (7-3) in seventh and going to Mogadore (8-2).

Remember, all of what you’ve just read is unofficial and the official pairings will be announced later today. But has a history of being accurate.
