Free admission at Sharon

Tonight at Sharon Speedway is “Fan Appreciation Night,” which is gives free general admisson for all fans. There isn’t much a family can do on a Saturday night for free entertainment in the area, but Sharon Speedway’s “Steel Valley Thunder” program is free to all.

It’s all part of tonight’s Father’s Day celebration. During intermission, all race cars and drivers will be on the track for an up-close look, an autograph and photo session. This is a once-a-year opportunity. Also, there are six divisions on tap with gates opening at 5 p.m. Racing starts at 7 p.m.

On June 24, Sharon is hosting its leg of Ohio Speedweek for the All-Star Circuit of Champions. This will be one of the premier Sprint car events of the year.

Also, the Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby takes place Saturday in Cortland on West Main Street. The event gets underway at 9 a.m. The winners go on to the All-American World Championship in Akron. The goals of the Soap Box Derby have not changed since it began in 1934, which are to teach youngsters basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project once it has begun.
