Happy Birthday: Shane leads Scrappers to victory
BATAVIA, N.Y. – Celebrating his 19th birthday with his new team, Casey Shane allowed just five hits and one unearned run in five innings of work to help the Mahoning Valley Scrappers beat the Batavia Muckdogs, 5-1.
The Scrappers (29-37) took the lead in the top of the first inning, when Greg Allen led off with a walk and Bradley Zimmer parked a homer to give Mahoning Valley a two-run lead.
That proved to be enough for Shane, who, outside of the top of the first, wasn’t really troubled by Batavia (30-37). Shane struck out two batters and didn’t walk a single one.
Zimmer added a third RBI in the top of the fifth, singling in Allen, and he was the only Scrapper to record multiple hits with three.
The Scrappers will look for the sweep against the Muckdogs today in Batavia. The game starts at 1:05 p.m.
