Scrappers fall in NY-PL Semifinals opener, 9-6

TROY, N.Y. — The Tri-City ValleyCats scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as they held off the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in Game 1 of the New York-Penn League Semifinals Wednesday, 9-6.

The two teams play tonight at Eastwood Field in Niles for Game 2 of the series, starting at 7:05 p.m. If the Scrappers win tonight’s game, it will force Game 3 on Friday in Niles.

The Scrappers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth inning, but Simeon Lucas lined out and Jonathan Englemann popped out as Austin Hansen, who went the final 3 1/3 innings, earned the save, striking out six.

Brett Conine went five innings and struck out four to get the win for Tri-City, while Zach Draper went the first 1 1/3, gave up four runs and took the loss for Mahoning Valley.

Jose Fermin went 1 for 5, while Ruben Cardenas was 3 for 5. Each had two RBIs for the Scrappers.

The Scrappers, down 9-2, rallied for two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

Both NY-PL Pinckney Division teams lost on Wednesday as Hudson Valley beat Auburn in the first game of their series, 11-5.
