MV captures finale; will meet Tri-City in playoffs

GRANVILLE, W.Va. — Connor Smith provided one more bit of excitement to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ 20th season, winning the final regular season game with a three-run double in the top of the 10th inning of a 4-1 decision Monday at West Virginia.

The victory left the Scrappers with a 42-33 record and atop the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League.

Reliever Erick Algarin (2-2) struck out four while allowing one hit over two scoreless innings. Starting pitcher Raymond Burgos struck out nine over 5 2/3 shutout innings for MV which starts the New York-Penn League playoffs on Wednesday night at Tri-City.

The ValleyCats, a Houston Astros farm team, are based in Troy, N.Y. Games two and three, if necessary, are scheduled Thursday and Friday at Eastwood Field. Both the first round and championship round are best-of-three games.

The Scrappers and ValleyCats finished with identical season records but did not face each other. Mahoning Valley earned the number two seed in the playoffs by virtue of a better division record.

Hudson Valley, champion of the McNamara Division, is the top seed. Auburn, which battled the Scrappers for the Pinckney Division title, captured the wild-card spot and will face the Renegades in the other first-round series.
