Scrappers win series against Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Williamsport couldn’t solve Zach Draper through five innings.

Mahoning Valley prefered it that way as the Scrappers beat the Crosscutters, 4-1, as Mahoning Valley won its second straight game Thursday at Bowman Field.

Draper (5-3) allowed six hits and struck out a season-high nine batters without allowing a walk.

Francisco Lopez went two scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and struck out one.

Manuel Alvarez finished the final two innings with an earned run on a hit. He walked one and struck out one.

Henry Pujols’ two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning with Jose Fermin on first base gave the Scrappers (31-20) a 3-0 lead.

Pujols put the first run on the board in the top of the first as he hit into a double play. Fermin, who moved to third on a single from Tyler Freeman, scored on the fielder’s choice. Freeman’s hitting streak reached 21 games.

With one out in the top of the eighth inning, Fermin scored Clark Scolamiero on a sacrifice fly.

The Scrappers (31-20) and Crosscutters conclude their series at 7:05 p.m. tonight.

Juan Mota is scheduled to start for Mahoning Valley.

The Scrappers return home for a doubleheader with the Auburn Doubledays on Wednesday.
