Scrappers split road twinbill

ABERDEEN, Md. — Friday’s washout turned into Saturday’s split for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Friday’s game against the Aberdeen Ironbirds was rained out, leading to Saturday’s doubleheader in which Aberdeen won the nightcap, 4-2, after the Scrappers won the opener, 3-0, at Ripken Stadium. Both games were seven innings.

It was the bottom of the order which came through for Saturday’s victory.

Ronny Dominguez, hitting out of the nine hole, singled to center field, scoring Jason Rodriguez and Michael Tinsley in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Dominguez was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Rodriguez singled to left field, scoring Gianpaul Gonzalez for a 3-0 advantage for the Scrappers (25-14).

Randy Valladares improved to 3-0 with two strikeouts, coming in relief of starter Cameron Mingo, who went four innings with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Scrappers couldn’t get the New York-Penn League’s best offense in gear in the other game as Aberdeen (16-23) scored in the bottom of the second and third innings.

Mahoning Valley capitalized on a Tyler Freeman double scoring Tre Gantt in the top of the third, while Clark Scolamiero hit a solo home run. Freeman is batting a NY-PL best .368.

The Scrappers go for their 11th series win of the season on this afternoon. On Monday, the Scrappers return to Eastwood Field to host Williamsport.
