Scrappers’ bats go quiet in rare loss to WV

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost for just the third time this season, falling 6-2 to West Virginia.

Mahoning Valley’s Richie Palacios accounted for three of the Scrappers’ seven hits, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs. He was all the offense they could muster against five Black Bear pitchers.

Palacios, the Cleveland Indians 2018 third-round pick, helped MV (10-3) avoid the shutout with an eighth-inning single. Palacios, an infielder, is off to a hot start, hitting .375 in his first five games. Jose Fermin also had a solid day, going 1-for-1 with a run scored and two walks.

Cameron Mingo started for the Scrappers, allowing three earned runs on six hits, two walks while striking out five over four innings. He fell to 1-1.

The Black Bears (6-8), who beat MV for the first time in five attempts, scored once in the second inning and added two more in the third. They essentially put the game out of reach with a three-run fifth inning, scoring on a ground out, a passed ball and a run-scoring single. Melvin Jimenez paced West Virginia at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs.

Michael LoPresti started and tossed four shutout innings, striking out two and allowing just two hits without a walk. Four relievers then followed over the next four innings, yielding two runs on four hits. Francis Del Orbe earned the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowing one hit.

The Scrappers, who still hold a three-game lead in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League, try to take the series at 7 p.m. tonight. They travel to State College on Sunday to start a three-game series before coming home for a six-game stretch, starting on Wednesday.
