Big week ahead at local tracks

Area and regional race fans have a big week ahead. It starts tonight and Saturday at Sharon Speedway. The good folks at Sharon are trying something no one else has ever done, the Steel Valley Pro Stock Nationals.

This division is usually a support class. This weekend, they are the headliner paying a whopping $10,000 to the winner, $500 to the fastest qualifier, $300 to start the race, $100 to win heat races and much more contingency money. There are 77 cars pre-entered for the 75-lap event.

Today will be open practice and tech inspection from 6 to 10 p.m. with free grandstand admission. On Saturday, group qualifying starts at 6:30 and admission is only $10.

This might be the premier event of the season. It should be some of the best side-by-side action you will see anywhere.

On Sunday, Tri-City Raceway Park in Franklin, Pa., holds its Father’s Day Shootout featuring 410 Sprint cars, RUSH Late Models in the Bill Emig Memorial and the newly-formed RUSH Sprint cars series.

The half-mile oval is a special events only track. This will be the first race on the new red clay surface that was recently added as several truck loads were brought in to improve the racing surface. Action starts at 6 p.m. and admission is $15.

The attention of area racing fans returns to the Hartford oval Tuesday with Tony Stewart’s All-Star Sprints as Sharon’s part of Ohio Speedweek. Nine races in nine days are scheduled for the 36th annual Speedweek. The grueling schedule — Sharon is night five — attracts drivers from coast to coast.

The RUSH Sportsman Modifieds will also be part of the program. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 7.

Come on out and support local auto racing. See why it’s better than any racing on TV.
