39th Warren Challenge Tournament underway

WARREN — The first round of qualifying is complete in the 39th Warren Challenge Bowling Tournament. The tournament was held at Echo Lanes on Jan. 6. Participating in the field of four bowlers are five past champions holding a combined eight titles. Past Champions include Adam Barta (2009, 2012, 2013, 2017), Mike Benton (2014), Jeff Czerniak (2003), Robert Harvischak (2015) and Bob Haynie (2016).

Squad A and Squad B of the second round of qualifying will start at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, on Jan. 7 at Champion Lanes. The third round of qualifying will be held on Jan. 13 starting at 12 p.m. at Freeway Lanes. At the end of qualifying, the top eight bowlers, based on total pin fall for the 18 games of qualifying, will advance to the finals. The finals are scheduled for Jan. 14 at Cortland Lanes. The finalists will bowl eight games head-to-head in match play to determine the 2018 Champion.

Through one day of qualifying, the top eight are as follows: 1. Joe Nuzzo 1463, 2. Tom Harcarik 1389, 3. Adam Barta 1377, 4. Rich Speicher 1347, 5. Jeff Czerniak 1337, 6. Butch Solarz 1332, 7. James Nolen 1328, 8. Mark Lias 1327. The next 18 bowlers are within 77 pins of the eighth-place finisher after day one.
