Scrappers begin playoffs in Vermont

NILES — New York-Penn League playoff baseball returns to Eastwood Field on Monday for the first time since 2009.

The Pinckney Division champion Mahoning Valley Scrappers will play host to the Vermont Lake Monsters Monday at 7:05 p.m. in Game 2 of a best-of-three first-round series. Game 1 is Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vermont. If Game 3 is necessary, it will be played at Eastwood Field on Tuesday night.

Vermont (42-33), an Oakland affiliate, won the Stadler Division title.

The Scrappers, who had their regular season finale rained out Thursday night, finished with the second-best record (44-29) in the league, trailing only McNamara Division champion Staten Island, which was 46-29.

The Yankees play wild-card winner Hudson Valley (44-31) in the other first-round series. Hudson Valley is an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
