Win keeps MV in first place

NILES — Hosea Nelson homered and had two hits, and Gregori Vasquez pitched six scoreless innings as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers beat the State College Spikes 6-3 on Sunday, maintaining their half-game lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.

Vasquez (3-2) allowed two hits while striking out three to pick up the win.

Mahoning Valley (27-18) took the lead in the first inning. After reaching base on a walk, Nolan Jones advanced to second on a single by Ulysses Cantu and then scored on a double by Simeon Lucas.

The Scrappers added two runs in the second and third innings, and one in the eighth.

The host State College again tonight at Eastwood Field before going to Aberdeen for three games. The Scrappers are home Friday through Sunday against Staten Island before the NYPL All-Star break.
