Loss drops MV to second

NILES — Mahoning Valley fell out of first place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division with Monday’s 3-2 loss to State College.

West Virginia (28-19) defeated Batavia 6-3 to take over first place. Williamsport (24-19) and State College (26-21) are both two games back.

The Scrappers (27-19) left nine runners on base.

Trailing 3-1, the Scrappers cut into the deficit in the eighth inning when Jonathan Laureano hit an RBI single, bringing home Jesse Berardi.

Mahoning Valley missed an additional scoring opportunity in the eighth, when Clark Scolamiero struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning. Evan Mendoza hit a run-scoring single in the third inning, scoring Bryce Denton, who reached base with a triple.

State College left-hander Andrew Summerville (3-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on three hits over five innings. Opposing starter Elijah Morgan (2-1) took the loss in the New York-Penn League game after giving up one run and three hits over three innings. Spencer Trayner pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his fifth save of the season.
