Big first inning carries Batavia over Scrappers

NILES — A seven-run first inning made quick work of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ four-game winning streak as the Batavia Muckdogs posted an 11-3 victory at Eastwood Field.

Despite the loss, the Scrappers remained in a three-way tie for first place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division. MV takes to the road now, traveling to Auburn and State College before returning home July 27 against Williamsport.

Batavia sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and the first six reached. A bases-loaded walk and two Mahoning Valley errors aided the visitors.

Hosea Nelson and Ernie Clement had run-scoring doubles in the ninth inning for Mahoning Valley. Jesse Berardi had the other Scrapper RBI with a run-scoring groundout in the fifth.

Felix Tati stood out on the mound for MV, pitching 5 2/3 innings of relief and allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
