Warren’s football legends to return

The list is impressive, to say the least: professional football players from Warren.

At least 30 young men (see chart, page 6D) from Warren have become professional football players over the years, and the Warren Gridiron Club is inviting them to return to visit with and play golf with their fans, all for a good cause.

The invitation is for the weekend of the Warren Homecoming, Sept. 23-26, but more specifically for the Gridiron Club’s inaugural NFL Legends of Warren reunion and celebrity golf outing on the Sunday and Monday of that weekend.

The event includes a Legends Celebration dinner on Sunday (Sept. 25) evening and golfing with the NFL Legends the next day. Both events are at the Trumbull Country Club and those interested in participating can attend both events, or just one.

Packages are available for Sunday dinner only, Monday golf only, or for both events. Sponsorship opportunities also are available for what promises to be a popular attraction.

A public autograph session on Saturday (Sept. 24) afternoon is scheduled at Holiday Inn Express in Howland, across Route 46 from the Eastwood Mall complex.

Proceeds from the event go toward the Warren G. Harding football program, helping to provide the necessary tools to possibly enable more young men to become professional football players.

Warren’s greatest football product, Hall of Famer Paul Warfield, and his wife, Beverly, are honorary co-chairpersons of the event. Also playing leading roles as chairpersons are Virginia Holmes of the Gridiron Club and former Tribune Chronicle (and others) sports writer Ray Yannucci.

As of late last week, players who had committed to attend the event were Alfie Burch, Jimmie Browner, Deryck Toles, Derrick Nelson, Prescott Burgess, David Arnold, Ross Browner, Aaron Brown, Mark Brandon, Mario Manningham, Vaness Decree and, of course, Warfield.

Those interested in taking part or seeking more information can contact Holmes at warrengrid@gmail.com.

The deadline for golf reservations is Sept. 19.

Come out and celebrate Warren’s football tradition.
