GOLF: Davies late for Fame event

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Laura Davies was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday, even though she wasn’t around to enjoy all of it. A four-hour flight delay out of Philadelphia forced her to miss the induction.

In a rush to the University of St. Andrews, she at least watched the ceremony on Sky Sports in the car, but when her pre-recorded video came on, the signal went out and she missed her speech and that of Mark O’Meara. She finally made it to the reception, a surprise to hundreds of guests who thought she had abandoned efforts to get there.

“Everything that seems to happen to me is weird,” Davies said at the reception.

Not her place in the Hall of Fame. That was earned with four major titles, more than 70 wins around the world and becoming such a dominant force in women’s golf that she starred on the LPGA Tour and still took time to crisscross the Atlanta Ocean to support the Ladies European Tour.

Davies was inducted along with major champions Mark O’Meara and David Graham of Australia and architect A.W. Tillinghast, who studied under Old Tom Morris and created golf courses that hosted majors.

NFL: Manziel signs for 350 fans

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – About 350 fans paid at least $125 each to meet former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel as he prepares for his second NFL season.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner appeared Sunday at Aggieland Outfitters in College Station. The Eagle newspaper reports Manziel hosted his first public autograph signing session since being drafted last year by Cleveland. The paper said Manziel’s licensing agent, Panini Authentic, oversaw the sold-out event that cost fans between $125 and $155 per ticket, depending on the size of the item being signed.

Manziel threw for 7,820 yards and 63 touchdowns for Texas A&M. He was suspended for the first half of the 2013 opener against Rice for what the school called an “inadvertent” violation of NCAA rules by signing autographs, allegedly for memorabilia brokers.

FORMER PLAYER MISSING: WYLIE, Texas – Authorities are searching for a former Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns receiver who fell out of a rented boat during a family outing at a Dallas-area lake. The Collin County Sheriff’s Office says 37-year-old JaJuan Dawson wasn’t wearing a lifejacket Sunday night when he fell into Lavon Lake, near Wylie.

Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Havey says it’s unclear why Dawson fell overboard, but alcohol isn’t considered a factor. Havey says murky waters are hindering the search. Dawson was a 6-foot-1, 197-pound receiver from Houston’s Bourgeois High School by way of Tulane who went on to a three-year NFL career. He spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons with Cleveland and 2002 with Houston. He had 52 catches for 664 yards and two touchdowns in his pro career.
