Scrappers win second straight, 7 out of 9

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored four runs in top of the 10th inning to pull away from the Williamsport Crosscutters in a 5-1 win on Saturday, their second in a row and seventh win out of their last nine games.

Taylor Murphy drove in the winning run for Mahoning Valley (18-24) with an RBI single to right field, scoring Francisco Mejia. The Scrappers went on to plate three more runs, all with two outs, as they collected five hits off Williamsport reliever Bryan Sova.

Those were the only five hits all game long for the Scrappers, who scored their lone run during regulation in the fourth inning after Steven Patterson was hit by a pitch, moved over to third base after a Bradley Zimmer walk and a wild and came home on a Mejia sacrifice fly to right field. Other than the fourth and the 10th innings, the Crosscutter pitchers kept the Scrappers’ bats silent.

Mahoning Valley’s pitchers allowed more hits throughout the game, but while the Crosscutters (21-21) threatened on multiple occasions, pitchers Julian Merryweather, David Speer and J.P. Feyereisen (2-0) stranded four runners in scoring position. Overall, Williamsport left eight players on the basepaths.

The Scrappers open up a three-game series at Eastwood Field against State College today at 5:05 p.m.
