Martino’s making way to TV
A little local flavor will be scene the next six Mondays as part of the Discovery Channel’s “Motor Monday” series of shows.
“Fat N’ Furious: Rolling Thunder” is a one-hour show that will air at 10 p.m. It features four workers at Christmas Automotive in Boardman. The company refurbishes old hot rods and turns them into dragsters.
The second episode will feature area drivers Ryan and Tom Martino. The two compete for a team in the NHRA Sportsmen Top Dragster division. They took a week off from their racing schedule to appear in the episode.
Ryan is excited about how the show will portray the Mahoning Valley. He doesn’t think people realize how popular racing and car shows in general are in the area.
“It’s hard to believe that with all the reality shows that Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley have the baddest hot rods on the planet,” Ryan said. “Show up for a car show in Youngstown or Warren, and they’re filled with cars you can’t believe are still in existence.
“This area has had a lot of automotive industry, and people are loyal to it. There’s nothing that can bring 20 to 30,000 people to an event in this area other than college football. You can put cars in a parking lot, and it will be filled.”
The show will highlight the humor and physical size of the cast. The Martinos recently had a dragster worked on by Tom Christmas and his crew.
“We literally just picked up our new dragster from paint at R&R Auto Body and were getting it prepped for assembly when Christmas and his crew showed up at our shop,” Tom said in a statement released by the Discovery Channel. “Bottom line is that between the constant jokes and non-stop entertainment they provide, these guys know cars inside and out and know how to get them to flat out perform.”
The Martino brothers have been involved in other television projects, including appearances in commercials for associates of Martino Motorsports and features on their race team.
“Even though this is our first reality TV show appearance, fans, fellow racers and automotive enthusiasts will definitely get a kick out of our appearance on Fat N’ Furious: Rolling Thunder,” Ryan said. “After the experience, I can definitely see my dad and me getting more involved with a show of our own down the road. The back door to our race trailer reads: ‘The Adventure Continues’ for a reason.”
