BOYS ROUNDUP: JFK blasts Newbury; sets up showdown with Windham
WARREN – Four John F. Kennedy Eagles scored in double figures as the Eagles doubled up Newbury, 81-40, in a Division IV sectional semifinal.
African Grant and Zachary Usher each tallied 18 points to lead Kennedy, which is now 9-13. James Burney tallied 14 and Preston Caparanis added 10.
Newbury finished the season at 2-21.
The Eagles advanced to Friday’s Division IV sectional final at Windham.
FAIRPORT HARDING 54, BADGER 43: VERNON – A rough second quarter was the difference for Badger as it dropped its Division IV sectional semifinal game against Fairport Harding.
The Braves trailed by two heading into the second quarter, but then only tallied three points in the frame. By halftime, Badger trailed by 13.
Brandon Bates led Badgerwith 17 points and Joe Gorospe added 10. The Braves finish the season with a 6-17 mark.
Fairport Harding takes on Chalker Friday night in Southington.
BROOKFIELD 68, GARFIELD 57: BROOKFIELD – A trio of Warriors scored in double figures as Brookfield kept Garfield at bay in a Division III sectional semifinal win.
At the half, Brookfield led 35-21. A big reason for the first-half lead was Seth Wallace, who scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half.
Nate Johnson paced Brookfield with 17 points. Jamar Tarver added 14. The Warriors now advance to take on Newton Falls on Friday.
Mason Butler led Garfield with 16 points.
URSULINE 81, ROOTSTOWN 39: YOUNGSTOWN – Ursuline took control in the first half and dominated a Division III sectional semifinal against Rootstown.
Mark Hughes scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter to help the Irish (14-8) take a 26-8 lead. Ursuline, which hosts Grand Valley on Friday, added to its lead and held a 47-13 advantage at halftime. Greg Parella contributed 11 points for the Irish, who had 13 players score.
Connor Formick led Rootstown (4-19) with 14 points.
LIBERTY 74, BERKSHIRE 43: LIBERTY – Asim Pleas and Cameron Clark combined for 41 points to lead the Leopards past the Badgers in this Division III sectional semifinal.
Pleas paced fifth-seeded Liberty (13-10) with 23 points, while Cameron Clark had 18. Dan Markulin added 11 points and DeAndre Brown had 10.
Jarrett Smetana led 12th-seeded Berkshire (14 of 40 from the floor) with 13 points.
Liberty, which shot 28 of 46 from the floor, travels to third-seeded Girard for a Division III sectional final on Friday.
CARDINAL 74, CHAMPION 57: MIDDLEFIELD – The Huskies jumped out to an 11-point first-quarter lead to cruise to a Division III sectional semifinal win over the Golden Flashes.
Chris Miller paced Champion (1-22) with 16 points, while freshman Michael Turner chipped in with 13.
Jake DiBlasio recorded a game-high 17 points for Cardinal (12-11), which faces top-seeded LaBrae on Friday. Justin McClain and Jacob Bosak contributed 15 points each in the win.
